Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
General Questions
San Blas Yacht Charters is a boutique sailing company devoted to a single, extraordinary destination: the San Blas Islands of Panama — one of the last truly pristine archipelagos in the Caribbean.
Our approach is intentionally selective. We offer a curated collection of premium catamarans only, each fully equipped with the comforts and onboard amenities discerning travelers expect, and crewed by experienced professionals who know San Blas from the inside out. This local expertise allows us to navigate beyond well-known routes and access the most secluded anchorages, where space, calm, and nature define the experience.
Every charter is bespoke and unhurried, shaped around your interests rather than a fixed itinerary. Days unfold naturally between crystal-clear snorkeling, quiet island exploration, cultural encounters with the Guna community, and long, relaxed moments on board. Meals are prepared fresh by your crew, using quality ingredients and tailored to your preferences, in keeping with the rhythm of life at sea.
We also take care of the journey as well as the sailing, coordinating seamless door-to-deck logistics from Panama City — whether by private flight, 4x4 road transfer, or a combination of both — so your time in San Blas feels effortless from the start.
Above all, we value legitimacy, discretion, and responsibility. We are fully registered and insured in Panama, operate with official authorization from the Guna Yala authorities, and maintain long-standing relationships with local communities — ensuring an experience that feels refined, authentic, and deeply connected to place.
San Blas Yacht Charters offers bespoke private catamaran charters through a carefully curated collection of premium vessels, paired with complete travel coordination and a highly personalized approach to sailing in San Blas, Panama.
Our focus is intentionally narrow. We work deliberately with a limited collection of premium vessels, valued for their comfort, condition, and suitability for extended stays in the San Blas archipelago. Each vessel is fully equipped and professionally crewed, allowing the experience to unfold with ease, consistency, and quiet confidence.
What defines our sailing is not a checklist of inclusions, but where and how we navigate. We spend our time in the quieter reaches of San Blas — remote cays, clear lagoons, and secluded anchorages across areas such as the Dutch Cays, Cambombia, and Coco Bandero — places that remain beyond the reach of mass tourism and day excursions.
Travel to and from the islands is coordinated with the same care as the sailing itself. From Panama City, transfers are thoughtfully arranged by air, road, or a combination of both, ensuring a smooth and unhurried transition from city to sea.
Everything we do is guided by discretion, local knowledge, and respect for place. The result is a sailing experience that feels composed and personal — shaped by nature, paced by the sea, and defined by genuine connection rather than excess.

Yes. We accept bank wire transfers and PayPal or credit card payments in euros.
For payments made on board, cash is accepted in USD only.
Yes, our charters are available through Airbnb upon request.
Please note that Airbnb applies its own service fees, which may result in a higher total price compared to booking directly with us.
For the most streamlined communication and best overall value, many guests choose to book directly.
Credit cards are not accepted in San Blas itself. The islands have no banks, ATMs, or payment terminals, either on board or ashore.
Your charter reservation may be paid in advance by credit card, bank wire, or PayPal. Once in San Blas, any small personal expenses are handled in cash.
Currency and cash guidance
The US dollar (USD) is the official currency in Panama and is used throughout San Blas. Guests arriving from the United States or other USD-based countries do not need to exchange money.
Euros are rarely accepted in the islands and, when they are, the exchange rate is unfavorable. We strongly recommend carrying USD instead.
Currency exchange options in Panama are limited. If needed, exchange services are available at Tocumen International Airport or at major banks in Panama City prior to departure.
How much cash should I bring?
Only modest amounts are required. Typical cash expenses include:
• Mandatory local entry fees
• Occasional island visits or handcrafted items such as molas
• Small, informal purchases ashore
For most guests, USD 20–30 per person, per day is more than sufficient.
Crew gratuities
Gratuities are always at your discretion. Should you wish to tip the crew, 15–20% of the charter rate is customary for excellent service. Tips may be given in cash or arranged after the charter by bank wire, credit card, PayPal, or US transfer.
Panama uses the US dollar (USD) alongside the Panamanian balboa, which is pegged at a 1:1 exchange rate. In everyday use, the US dollar is the standard currency and is accepted everywhere.
If you need to exchange money, currency services are available at international airports upon arrival and at major banks in Panama City. For travel to San Blas, we recommend carrying USD in small denominations for convenience.
Very little. Our all-inclusive charters cover nearly all on-board expenses, so additional costs in San Blas are minimal.
For small personal purchases ashore or local fees, USD 200–300 in cash per person is more than sufficient. We also recommend traveling light and leaving unnecessary valuables at home.
Yes. We offer preferred rates for longer charters, reflecting the added value of extended time sailing in San Blas:
• 10 nights: 10% off
• 20 nights: 20% off
• 30 nights: 30% off
These advantages apply to standard sailing periods and are not available during Christmas and Easter, when demand and capacity are limited.
Yes. Children under 12 years of age are charged 50% of the standard charter rate.
Our pricing reflects the true scope and quality of the experience we offer.
We operate modern, fully equipped catamarans—assets comparable in value to high-end real estate and requiring constant professional maintenance. In San Blas, our fleet stands out for comfort, reliability, and onboard amenities, supported by experienced local crews.
Each charter includes a dedicated professional team—captain, cook, and, when appropriate, an additional crew member—on board throughout your journey. This team is responsible for navigation, safety, service, and the smooth operation of the vessel, allowing guests to fully relax from the moment they step on board.
Our charters are also genuinely all-inclusive. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are freshly prepared on board, accompanied by natural beverages and a selection of alcoholic drinks. Once sailing, there are no operational surprises or ongoing expenses to manage.
While a private catamaran charter cannot be compared to land-based accommodation, it offers something fundamentally different: privacy, mobility, personalized service, and access to remote islands that cannot be reached otherwise. For travelers seeking a seamless, immersive experience in one of the Caribbean’s most unspoiled regions, this level of service represents both comfort and value.
Yes. We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance for your sailing trip.
Travel insurance providers typically offer policies costing 5–10% of the total trip value, covering private yacht vacations and international travel. Considering that all-inclusive catamaran charters and flights often represent a significant investment, insurance offers peace of mind in case of unforeseen events or force majeure situations.
Trip Cancellation Scenarios
On Your Side
The most common reasons for cancellation are personal, such as illness or injury before departure. Other less frequent reasons may include jury duty or military deployment. If you have any medical history or potential uncertainties that could affect your travel plans, travel insurance is highly recommended.
On Our Side
Cancellations due to our operations are extremely rare. In the unlikely event of a technical issue with your assigned catamaran, we will offer an upgrade at no additional cost whenever possible. If a smaller catamaran must be provided, the charter price will be adjusted accordingly.
Force Majeure & Natural Conditions
San Blas is located outside the hurricane belt, making it a year-round sailing destination. Cancellations due to tropical storms or hurricanes are not a concern in this region. While some months may experience occasional rainfall, it is never severe enough to disrupt a sailing itinerary. Panama has no history of major earthquakes or significant natural disasters, contributing to a safe and stable environment for sailing.
Why Travel Insurance Matters
Trip cancellation insurance can reimburse up to 100% of non-refundable deposits, helping protect your investment if plans change unexpectedly.
Guests are encouraged to research international travel insurance options independently.
You may search for “international travel insurance” online or consult established providers such as Allianz Travel Insurance. We are not affiliated with any insurance company.
Yes, it is possible. We work with trusted platforms such as Coinbase and Binance, leading cryptocurrency providers that make it simple and secure to buy, sell, and store digital assets.
San Blas Yacht Charters offers full flexibility when it comes to the number of nights you book.
The minimum stay is 1.5 nights, which includes a late departure at 15:30. While stays of any length are possible, guests who wish to explore highlights such as the Dutch Cays or Coco Bandero Cays will enjoy a more relaxed and complete experience with a minimum of 4 nights.
During peak periods, minimum stays apply: 5 nights over Christmas and 4 nights during Easter.
Life on board is relaxed, immersive, and intentionally simple but fascinating. Surrounded by turquoise waters and untouched islands, guests naturally slow down and reconnect with the sea. A sailing charter, however, is a living experience rather than a hotel stay—and understanding this difference is essential to fully enjoying the journey.
Our catamaran collection is fully equipped and all-inclusive, offering kayaks, electric sea scooters, electric sea kickboards, paddleboards, snorkeling and fishing gear, along with everything needed for a comfortable and seamless stay on board. Please note that the types and quantities of equipment may vary by boat, while all vessels are designed to ensure a comfortable and seamless stay on board.
Exploring the nearby coral reefs is an essential part of the experience, and your captain is always available to guide you, assist with equipment, and suggest activities based on your interests.
A typical day begins with a relaxed breakfast on board. Afterward, the captain will propose options tailored to the weather, location, and your preferences. You might visit a nearby island to meet members of the local Guna community and learn about their traditions, or take a kayak or paddleboard to explore the surroundings independently. Snorkeling, swimming, reading, or simply enjoying the view all fit naturally into the rhythm of the day.
After lunch and some downtime, the afternoon may include learning about local marine life, enjoying a fresh coconut on the beach, stopping at a small Guna hut for a drink, or wandering barefoot across the islands. When available, fresh fruit is often used to prepare a casual cocktail before dinner. Evenings are calm and unhurried, with a freshly prepared meal followed by a restful night at anchor.
To keep each day fresh and engaging, the anchorage is typically changed at least once per day. This sense of continuous discovery—especially appreciated by families—makes every day feel different while maintaining a peaceful flow. The San Blas Islands offer a rare combination of natural beauty, cultural depth, and freedom, creating an experience that feels both effortless and deeply memorable.
While we offer carefully designed itineraries highlighting the most secluded and pristine islands of San Blas, the experience is always shaped around your preferences.
If you have specific islands or experiences in mind, simply let us know and we will do our best to adapt the route, ensuring a personalized and memorable sailing experience.
San Blas is a true year-round sailing destination, so the best time to visit depends mainly on your personal preferences rather than the season.
• Consistent sailing conditions
The region enjoys calm seas and reliable winds throughout the year, making it ideal for relaxed and safe sailing in any season.
• High season (December to April)
This period offers drier, sunnier weather with warm temperatures—perfect for those who enjoy classic Caribbean conditions and lively sailing months.
• Low season (May to November)
Fewer visitors, exceptionally calm seas, and lighter winds create a quieter, more tranquil atmosphere. This season is also excellent for spotting marine life and enjoying the islands at a slower pace.
• Natural beauty & culture
Regardless of when you visit, San Blas delivers pristine islands, turquoise waters, rich marine life, and the unique cultural heritage of Guna Yala.
In short, San Blas adapts beautifully to every season. Whether you prefer vibrant sunny months or a more peaceful escape, it remains an exceptional destination all year long.
The best itinerary depends on the length of your stay, your preferred arrival and departure options, and the experiences you would like to prioritize.
Longer charters allow you to explore deeper into the archipelago and reach more remote highlights, such as “The Pool,” one of the most remarkable and sought-after spots in San Blas.
Regardless of the route, our crewed catamaran charters are fully flexible and can be adapted to make the most of your time in San Blas—widely considered one of the Caribbean’s finest yacht destinations.

San Blas, also known as Guna Yala, is a remote archipelago of more than 365 pristine islands, defined by white-sand beaches, palm-lined shores, and remarkably clear turquoise waters. The setting is quiet and natural, ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and slow exploration, with vibrant marine life and excellent visibility beneath the surface.
What truly sets San Blas apart is its cultural depth. Visiting the islands offers a rare opportunity to engage with the Guna people, whose traditions, craftsmanship, and way of life remain deeply rooted in the region. Their hospitality, artistry, and respect for nature shape the character of the destination and the experience itself.
San Blas is fundamentally different from destinations such as the British Virgin Islands, St. Maarten, or the Bahamas. There are no resorts, large marinas, or mass tourism developments. The islands remain undeveloped and protected, preserving a sense of authenticity that is increasingly rare in the Caribbean. For sailors seeking simplicity, privacy, and unspoiled surroundings, it is one of the most rewarding cruising grounds in the region.
This is not a destination for party-focused boating or nightlife. Guests looking for a lively social scene may feel more at home in places like Bocas del Toro or along the Pacific coast. San Blas favors a quieter rhythm, where safety, respect, and cultural awareness are essential to fully appreciating the environment and its people.
San Blas offers something increasingly rare: space, silence, and a genuine connection to nature and culture. It is a place that invites presence rather than distraction—one of the last truly untouched sailing destinations in the Caribbean.
If you arrive by road, your transfer will take you to one of the Cartí ports, which serve as the main access points to San Blas.
Sailing directly to the port is not possible due to extremely shallow waters influenced by nearby rivers. In addition, the coastal area near the ports is muddy and lacks the clarity and beauty found around the outer cays. For this reason, meeting the catamaran close to shore would not provide the best first impression of San Blas.
Instead, catamarans are typically anchored at Cayo Limón, a much more scenic and comfortable starting point. This allows guests to begin their experience in clear waters, enjoy a quick snorkel at the nearby reef, and settle in immediately. From Cayo Limón, it is only about a one-hour sail to the Dutch Cays. By comparison, boarding from Cartí port would add roughly three extra hours of sailing to reach the same area.
Arriving by plane offers a different experience altogether. You’ll enjoy a 40-minute flight, land directly next to the catamaran, and begin your journey immediately, followed by a short 45-minute sail to the Coco Bandero Cays, one of the most beautiful areas in San Blas.
The destinations you’ll explore depend on your starting point and the length of your stay. From there, we shape the itinerary to make the most of your time in San Blas.
We focus on sailing to exclusive, secluded islands, deliberately avoiding crowded areas so you can fully enjoy the tranquility, natural beauty, and rhythm of the archipelago.
Our signature routes include some of the most iconic locations in San Blas, such as Coco Bandero Cays, Cambombia Island, and Bapurgana Island—each known for its clear waters, peaceful anchorages, and stunning surroundings.
The longer your stay, the deeper you can venture into the archipelago, uncovering lesser-known islands and hidden gems. Regardless of trip length, every itinerary is adapted to enhance your experience, and if you have a specific route or destination in mind, we’re happy to consider it whenever conditions allow.
If you choose the flight transfer, you’ll arrive in San Blas at approximately 8:15 AM. The catamaran is anchored just a 2-minute dinghy ride from the airstrip, allowing you to board almost immediately after landing.
For early risers, an earlier departure from Panama City can be arranged at 6:15 AM, placing you on board shortly before 7:00 AM.
Please note that flight schedules and boarding times may vary slightly due to weather conditions or unforeseen operational factors.
Our focus is on remote, unspoiled sailing destinations. While Las Perlas is accessible and scenic, its close proximity to Panama City and the ferry connection has led to a noticeable increase in tourism. The growth of hotels, boats, and commercial activity has changed the character of the islands, similar to what has occurred in destinations like Bocas del Toro.
In contrast, the San Blas Islands are part of an indigenous Guna Yala reservation, where land cannot be sold to foreigners. This status protects the islands from large-scale development, ensuring the absence of resorts, marinas, and urban noise.
With more than 365 islands, crystal-clear waters, white-sand beaches, and a deeply rooted Guna culture, San Blas offers a peaceful and authentic sailing experience that remains largely untouched. The emphasis here is on nature, simplicity, and cultural respect rather than commercial tourism.
Having sailed extensively throughout the Caribbean, we consider San Blas to be one of the last truly preserved sailing destinations in the region.
Food on board is designed to reflect the tropical setting and the local culture of the San Blas Islands. Our goal is to offer a fresh, authentic culinary experience that goes beyond standard charter meals and connects guests more closely with the region.
Seafood plays a central role in the onboard cuisine. Thanks to the immediate proximity to the sea, ingredients are exceptionally fresh, offering clean, vibrant flavors that reflect the simplicity and authenticity of island life.
The menu is primarily pescatarian, featuring fresh fish and a variety of seafood, complemented by fruits, vegetables, legumes, eggs, rice, and pasta. Meat is not a traditional part of the local diet, but when requested, it is usually limited to chicken. This approach aligns naturally with the culinary culture of San Blas.
From March 1 to June 30, we respect the local no-catch lobster season in San Blas.
Menus can be easily adapted to suit your dietary preferences, including vegan, keto, raw, or other specific requests. It is essential that you inform us in advance of any allergies or food intolerances so meals can be prepared with appropriate care.
Snacks
On board, snacks are freshly prepared and natural, avoiding processed or pre-packaged supermarket products. All meals and snacks are prepared on board. If you have a preference for specific packaged snacks such as chocolate, chips, or crackers, you are welcome to bring them along.
Meals for children are based on the same fresh dishes served to adults, with simple adjustments to suit younger tastes. If your children have specific preferences, you’re welcome to bring their favorite items or let us know at least 15 days before your trip, and we’ll be happy to accommodate whenever possible.
Yes. We offer alcohol-free sailing charters, and guests who choose this option receive a 5% reduction on the charter rate.
Choosing an alcohol-free charter is not simply about removing alcohol—it’s about experiencing life at sea with greater clarity and balance. Many guests appreciate the added sense of presence, waking up refreshed, enjoying each day with more energy, and sharing more meaningful moments on board. It also enhances safety and comfort while exploring remote islands and navigating the archipelago.
Non-alcoholic beverages on board
We provide a selection of soft drinks and freshly prepared beverages, including:
• Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola Light, Fresca, Ginger Ale
• La Croix sparkling water, Tropicana orange juice
• Fresh juices, iced teas, lemonade, and other refreshing soft drinks
Prefer alcohol on board?
For guests who enjoy a classic sailing experience, our catamarans also offer a full open-bar package. Those seeking a more elevated option may choose the VIP Beverage Package, available at $90 per person per day, featuring an expanded premium selection to complement your San Blas sailing experience.
Yes. We offer 25% off selected charter dates between August 30 and October 30.
This offer applies to new, direct bookings of all-inclusive charters only and cannot be combined with other promotions or discounts.
Late summer is an excellent time to experience San Blas. The seas are especially calm, anchorages are quiet and uncrowded, and the islands feel even more remote. Warm days, peaceful sailing conditions, and striking sunsets make this period ideal for enjoying San Blas at its most serene.
Tipping on catamaran charters is customary and typically ranges between 5% and 15% of the charter value, depending on the level of service provided. The amount is entirely at your discretion and should reflect how the captain and cook contributed to your overall experience.
Gratuities may be given directly in cash to the captain or cook. If you prefer, you can also arrange the tip through us, and we will ensure it is distributed appropriately.
No. When you book a private catamaran charter, the vessel is reserved exclusively for you and your group. The only people on board will be your professional crew, consisting of a captain and a cook.
For larger groups, a Guna Indigenous crew member may also be included to assist with deck operations and, if desired, to act as a cultural guide and translator—offering deeper insight into Guna traditions and local communities.
Our 5-Star rated crew’(https://www.tripadvisor.es/Attraction_Review-g1787391-d3865586-Reviews-Catamaran_Adventures_San_Blas-El_Porvenir_San_Blas_Islands_Guna_Yala_Region.html)s priority is to deliver a seamless and personalized experience. With attentive service and thoughtful care throughout your journey, they ensure you can relax completely and enjoy the natural beauty and cultural richness of San Blas.
Our yachts offer Starlink high-speed internet.
Internet and cellular coverage in San Blas can be intermittent due to the limited infrastructure in the Guna Yala region. Some anchorages provide better connectivity than others, and occasional outages are normal in this remote environment.
If reliable internet is essential for work or important communications, please let us know in advance so we can consider anchorages and routing that may improve connectivity. Even with Starlink, a certain level of disconnection is part of the San Blas experience.
If you need to rely on connectivity, there are a few practical alternatives that can be useful even when a catamaran is equipped with Starlink. While Starlink is generally the most reliable option in San Blas, mobile networks can occasionally serve as a backup in specific anchorages.
Mobile roaming
If your mobile plan supports international roaming, you may have limited signal in certain areas of San Blas. Coverage is inconsistent and depends on location, so we recommend checking roaming conditions and rates with your home provider before traveling.
Local SIM card (recommended as a backup)
Purchasing a Tigo SIM card in Panama City and adding a local data plan is the most cost-effective mobile option. Data packages are affordable and easy to activate. While coverage remains limited in the islands, a local SIM can occasionally provide basic connectivity when satellite service is temporarily unavailable. SIM cards are widely available in the city; airport vendors typically charge higher prices.
For guests who need to stay connected, having both Starlink and a local SIM offers the best flexibility, providing redundancy rather than guaranteed high-speed access in this remote region.
San Blas is one of the most remote sailing destinations in the Caribbean, valued for its seclusion and minimal connection to the outside world. This remoteness also means limited infrastructure, including the absence of nearby marinas, repair facilities, fuel stations, and provisioning services.
On rare occasions, a technical issue may arise that requires a vessel to sail to the nearest marina, located approximately 40 miles from San Blas. In such cases, we will immediately assign another catamaran from our fleet to ensure your charter proceeds as planned.
If the replacement catamaran is of higher value than your original booking, there will be no additional cost to you. If the substitute vessel is of lower value, the price difference will be refunded accordingly.
We do not cancel charters due to technical issues. As a boutique charter company with access to a handpicked collection of yachts, we are able to offer seamless alternatives and ensure continuity of your sailing experience.
Environmental responsibility is a core part of how we operate in San Blas. Reducing—and whenever possible eliminating—plastic use on board is just one element of our broader commitment to preserving this exceptional destination.
We actively work to protect the more than 365 islands of the San Blas archipelago and their surrounding marine ecosystems, while offering a high-quality sailing experience in one of the most remote and pristine areas of the Caribbean.
Our approach focuses on conscious sailing practices, responsible waste management, and respectful interaction with the natural and cultural environment.
Guests are also encouraged to take part in preserving this unique archipelago, helping ensure San Blas remains untouched for generations to come.
Our all-inclusive catamaran charters include a curated open bar service. However, responsible consumption is essential to ensure safety on board and to fully enjoy the San Blas sailing experience.
In line with World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, moderate consumption generally means up to two glasses of beer or wine per day. This may also include a limited number of cocktails prepared by the crew in the evenings, always enjoyed responsibly.
Our onboard bar is thoughtfully stocked with beers, international wines, premium spirits, and cocktail essentials, offering a well-balanced selection. Guests may also bring their own alcoholic beverages if desired.
Please note that our charters are not party or drinking-focused cruises. Excessive intoxication that endangers personal safety, disrupts the experience, or interferes with crew operations will not be tolerated. Our aim is to maintain a calm, safe, and enjoyable atmosphere throughout the voyage.
Its reputation comes down to simplicity and exceptional ingredients. We prepare our Piña Coladas using fresh pineapple, rich natural coconut, and locally produced Ron Abuelo, Panama’s flagship rum—widely respected by rum experts for its quality and character.
Nothing is overcomplicated or artificial. The balance of fresh fruit, smooth coconut, and premium rum creates a Piña Colada that is vibrant, refreshing, and unmistakably tropical—often becoming a favorite moment of the sailing experience.
The crystal-clear waters of San Blas are home to healthy coral reefs filled with colorful tropical fish, including parrotfish, angelfish, snappers, and groupers. Sea turtles are commonly spotted as well, particularly hawksbill, green, and loggerhead turtles, along with occasional sightings of playful bottlenose dolphins.
The waters of Guna Yala also host a rich variety of marine invertebrates, such as sea stars and crustaceans like crabs and lobsters. Rays are frequently seen, and nurse sharks—often called “sleeper sharks” for their calm nature—are another highlight. Swimming near these gentle creatures is a memorable experience, especially around areas like Coco Bandero Cays.
The Guna people actively protect their marine environment, limiting human impact and preserving the ecosystem. Thanks to this strong conservation ethic, wildlife encounters are frequent and authentic—and during certain seasons, you may even spot migrating humpback whales passing through the region.
In San Blas, certain activities such as scuba diving, kitesurfing, windsurfing, and surfing are not permitted. These restrictions are set by the Guna Indigenous community as part of their long-standing commitment to sustainability and the protection of their land, reefs, and marine ecosystems. The goal is to preserve the pristine and undeveloped nature of the archipelago.
That said, San Blas offers a wide range of low-impact, environmentally respectful activities that allow you to fully enjoy the sea and islands. Guests can enjoy snorkeling, paddleboarding, kayaking, fishing, electric sea kickboards and electric sea scooters, all included on our catamarans.
Snorkeling is a highlight, with crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and abundant marine life. Kayaking and paddleboarding are ideal for exploring nearby islands and shallow lagoons at your own pace, while sea scooters offer a fun and effortless way to discover the underwater world. For fishing enthusiasts, night fishing is also a popular and memorable experience.
Of course, time can also be spent simply relaxing—walking barefoot along white-sand beaches, swimming in turquoise waters, or resting in the shade of coconut palms.
All activities offered on board are carefully selected to respect the local environment while allowing you to experience the very best of San Blas.
Both options are possible, but we strongly recommend flying whenever feasible, as it offers a smoother, more efficient, and far more enjoyable start to your sailing experience.
Timing & convenience
Road transfers require very early hotel pickups, usually around 5:00 AM. Flying, on the other hand, allows for a more relaxed start, with arrivals at the Albrook domestic terminal typically between 8:00 and 10:00 AM, depending on flight availability. Landing times can often be adjusted—just let us know your preference.
Travel experience
Road transfers take approximately 4 hours in total, including the drive, border wait times, and waiting for the water taxi, followed by at least a 40-minute water taxi ride to reach your catamaran, depending on sea conditions. When flying, you reach San Blas in about 40 minutes, landing directly in one of the most scenic and uncrowded areas of the archipelago. From there, it’s usually just a 2-minute dinghy ride to your catamaran, anchored right next to the airstrip.
Comfort & simplicity
Flying avoids long road journeys, early wake-up calls, and unpredictable delays. It’s a straightforward, hassle-free transfer with no airport crowds and minimal logistics.
The journey itself
A short flight over jungle landscapes and turquoise cays is part of the experience and offers spectacular views from the air. By comparison, the combined road and boat journey can take close to four hours in total.
Booking flights
Flights into San Blas are limited, so booking in advance is recommended. Reservations are simple and can usually be made via phone, WhatsApp, or email, with a 20% deposit payable by credit card or PayPal.
Important note on road transfers
If you choose a road transfer, please be aware that all road access and ports within the Guna Yala region are managed by the local Guna authorities. As these services are outside our control, we cannot be held responsible for delays or operational issues.
We are happy to assist with either option, but for comfort, efficiency, and overall experience, flying is our preferred and recommended way to enter San Blas.
Boarding location depends on how you arrive in San Blas:
Arriving by air
If you choose an air transfer, the catamaran will be anchored right next to the airstrip. Boarding is quick and easy, with a 2-minute dinghy ride, allowing you to start your cruise almost immediately. From there, the stunning Coco Bandero Cays are typically just a 30-minute sail away.
Arriving by road
Guests arriving by road from Panama City will reach Cartí, the main port of San Blas. From there, you will board a water taxi arranged by the transfer company. The ride to the catamaran takes approximately 40 minutes, and the yacht is usually anchored at Cayo Limón or within the Dutch Cays area.
Please note that the exact anchorage may vary depending on wind conditions and sea state, ensuring safe and comfortable boarding.

Road transfers involve several stages and logistical factors that can make the journey more time-consuming than expected. Distance, border procedures, and water taxi coordination all play a role.
What to expect along the way
• Panama City to the border: Approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes by road.
• Border formalities: Presentation of identification and payment of local taxes are required.
• Border wait times: Queues at the road border are common, and waiting times can vary and are often unpredictable.
• Border to the port: After crossing, the drive continues for about 40 minutes to the port, where you will board a shared water taxi.
• Water taxi waiting time: You may wait 15–20 minutes or longer for your assigned boat, depending on traffic and coordination.
• Water taxi ride: The trip to the catamaran takes at least 40 minutes and may include brief stops along the way.
• Sea conditions: Water taxis have open seating, and rides can be bumpy in choppy conditions. A light rain jacket is recommended.
Important to know
All road transfers and water taxis within the Guna Yala Comarca are operated exclusively by Guna Indigenous drivers and authorized boat captains. Charter companies are not permitted to operate their own vehicles or water taxis for these transfers, as this system is regulated by local law.
For guests seeking a smoother and more direct journey, this is why flying into San Blas is often the preferred option.
When traveling by road, arrival in Panama City is typically before noon. Please note that exact timing may vary due to weather conditions, traffic, or other unforeseen circumstances.
All road transfers within the Guna Yala Comarca are operated exclusively by the Guna Indigenous authorities. As these services are outside our direct control, we cannot be held responsible for delays or operational issues that may occur during the transfer.

No. We no longer offer shared charters. All of our sailing experiences are private, reserved exclusively for you and your group.
We no longer offer shared cabin charters. All of our catamarans are booked exclusively as private charters.
A private charter gives you full use of the entire yacht, with no other guests on board, allowing for a fully personalized sailing experience. This is particularly important in San Blas, where travelers often seek different rhythms, activities, and levels of privacy. A private charter ensures complete flexibility, comfort, and the freedom to shape the journey around your own preferences.
Yes. If you board the catamaran in the morning, a late checkout is available and is a great way to extend your time in San Blas. Late checkouts are charged at half a night’s rate, regardless of whether you’re on a short or longer charter.

No. Excessive intoxication is not permitted on our catamarans.
Alcohol can significantly impair judgment, balance, and reaction time—factors that are especially important when sailing or even while at anchor. It can also affect orientation, vision, and depth perception, increasing the risk of accidents on board or in the water.
For these reasons, we encourage responsible and moderate consumption. Enjoying a beer, a glass of wine, or a cocktail is perfectly acceptable. However, being intoxicated to the point of unsafe, disruptive, or disrespectful behavior is not tolerated.
For the safety of all guests and crew, the captain has full authority to take appropriate action if necessary. This may include suspending activities, ending the charter early, or disembarking the group, without refund.
San Blas is a destination meant to be experienced with clarity and presence. Drinking excessively can take away from everything the islands have to offer, and we want you to enjoy the experience fully.
Finally, any use or possession of illegal drugs on board will result in immediate termination of the charter, notification of local authorities, and no refund.

In most cases, no. Seasickness is uncommon in the San Blas Islands thanks to the naturally calm sailing conditions and the stability of catamarans.
• Calm, protected waters:
San Blas is sheltered from the open sea by extensive coral reefs, which significantly reduce swell. Anchorages are calm, and sailing between islands is generally smooth.
• Stable catamarans:
Catamarans are known for their wide beams and excellent stability, offering a far smoother experience than monohull sailboats—ideal for both experienced sailors and first-time guests.
• Easy adaptation:
Most guests acclimate quickly to life at sea, and longer stays make it even easier to feel comfortable on board.
• Arrival choice matters:
The only moment that may feel slightly bumpy is the 40+ minute water taxi ride when arriving by road. Guests prone to motion sensitivity often prefer flying, which avoids this transfer entirely.
• Experienced captains:
Our captains have extensive local knowledge and carefully select anchorages to minimize movement and ensure comfort at all times.
• Close to shore:
In the unlikely event that someone feels unwell, calm beaches are always nearby, making it easy to step ashore and rest.
San Blas is one of the most comfortable sailing destinations in the Caribbean, requiring no prior sailing experience and offering a relaxed environment for adults and children alike.
No. Hair dryers are not permitted on board, as they require a high power load that is not suitable for the yacht’s electrical system.

San Blas Yacht Charters FAQs

What to expect along the way

• Water taxi waiting time: You may wait 15–20 minutes or longer for your assigned boat, depending on traffic and coordination.
• Water taxi ride: The trip to the catamaran takes at least 40 minutes and may include brief stops along the way.
• Sea conditions: Water taxis have open seating, and rides can be bumpy in choppy conditions. A light rain jacket is recommended.

For guests seeking a smoother and more direct journey, this is why flying into San Blas is often the preferred option.
When traveling by road, arrival in Panama City is typically before noon. Please note that exact timing may vary due to weather conditions, traffic, or other unforeseen circumstances.
